The Rare Occasions of a Hidden Twin
As with most pregnancy concerns, there are some very rare exceptions. Chances are, you are not having twins if there is no evidence of multiples on ultrasound. However, it is not unheard of, particularly when the ultrasound is performed in the first two months of pregnancy.
Can a twin be missed at 8 week ultrasound?
Twins can be detected on an ultrasound in the first trimester — as early as 4-6 weeks after you miss your period, and their heartbeats can be found at 6-8 weeks (it’s also pretty hard to distinguish two heartbeats, and having two doesn’t always indicate twins).
Can an ultrasound Miss Twins at 7 weeks?
Anything is possible, but it is rare to miss on an ultrasound. My docs saw my twins on the ultrasound at 6 weeks.
Can you be pregnant with twins and miscarry one?
Sadly, pregnancy loss in the first 12 weeks (early miscarriage) for both single and multiple pregnancies is common. It usually happens because an embryo is not developing as it should. But in some cases, the reason for, or cause of, losing a twin can’t be found.

Will 12 week scan show twins?
An ultrasound scan is the only way to confirm that you’re pregnant with twins. The earliest you’re likely to find out is between 10 weeks and 13 weeks plus six days, when you have your dating scan (NCCWCH 2011, McAslan Fraser 2012). Ultrasound is almost foolproof at diagnosing twins.
Can you be pregnant and not see the baby on an ultrasound?
Before that, even in a viable pregnancy, there is not going to be a visible gestational sac on an ultrasound. If the pregnancy is definitely past five weeks, or the hCG level is higher than 2000, a finding of no gestational sac is more likely to indicate a problem.
